Getting to know Botanikal!
What made you get into floral design?
Hmmm, what made me get into floral design… well, I wanted a job that I could love. Somewhere I could be creative and share that with others! Daily floral design is one thing, however, wedding design involves a lot of intentional thought and planning. I love the thrill of planning a party where details are noticed and guest’s feel special. Being part of a momentous celebration is intoxicating.
What does your flower design process look like?
The floral design process is different for every designer. I personally look at it as an hourglass (large at the beginning, narrow in the middle, and broad at the end). I listen to my clients ideas, hear their thoughts, and scan through numerous pictures on pinterest boards. From here I help them narrow down what really stands out or inspires them. Once that is understood details start to develop into a larger plan. Flower lists begin to form, containers are selected, specialty candle lighting and finishing touches are pursued.
What is your favorite part of designing wedding floral arrangements?
This is hard. I love putting together color palettes, and planning special touches. I would probably say that my favorite part of design is the hands on work that happens the week of preparation. Actually putting together the bridal bouquet makes me giddy. This is never the same because in the world of perishable product it can always be a bit of a surprise. This is where true creativity takes place.
What are your favorite flowers to work with?
Favorite flower, really? How do I choose? I am a sucker for garden roses with their array of different scents and fading colors. That being said, I will always choose to add some sort of textural item: grasses, pods, succulents, berries/fruit, feathers. This seems to bring a bouquet to life and add such interest.
What is your best wedding advice?
Hire a professional! This is our job, we are used to the unexpected, have a wealth of experience, vast resources, and we love what we do! Sometimes it can be hard to hire someone and pay money for what you can do yourself. I get it, I’m a hands on person. This is different, this is your wedding day. You should be pampered, focused on your family, enjoying your friends. I promise that it’s worth hiring the right vendors to facilitate this.
